I am at home between dream and day,
There where children rest, tired from play,
There where the elders sit down for the night,
And hearths glow and fill their rooms with light.

I am at home between dream and day,
There where evening bells ring out all around,
And girls, led captive by their echoing sound,
Lean back in fatigue against the fountain's spray.

And an ancient linden is my favorite tree,
And all the summers that in it slumber,
Begin to stir in its thousand branches,
And awake again between dream and day.

Ich bin zu Hause zwischen Tag und Traum.
Dort wo die Kinder schläfern, heiß vom Hetzen,
dort wo die Alten sich zu Abend setzen,
und Herde glühn und hellen ihren Raum.

Ich bin zu Hause zwischen Tag und Traum.
Dort wo die Abendglocken klar verlangen
und Mädchen, vom Verhallenden befangen,
sich müde stützen auf den Brunnensaum.

Und eine Linde ist mein Lieblingsbaum;
und alle Sommer, welche in ihr schweigen,
rühren sich wieder in den tausend Zweigen
und wachen wieder zwischen Tag und Traum.
