The famous Paula Modersohn-Becker portrait of Rilke. One of the most well-known German female artists at the beginning of the 20th century, Modersohn-Becker was, like Rilke's wife, Clara, a central figure at the artist's colony at Worpswede in the north of Germany. Modersohn-Becker died tragically three weeks after giving birth to her first child. It was this loss of one of his closest friends, that moved Rilke to write his hauntingly beautiful Requiem.
