(Photo: Rising Sun, Setting
Moon: A unique mid-winter moment.
This photograph was made
at about 5:30 in the morning in the middle of January. The peaks in the
background all face East,
and are beginning to come alive with light hours before the rest of the valley.
Because of the high
ridge which forms the southern boundary of this valley, the point at which
the picture was taken
will not be touched by direct sunlight until about the end of February, and
then only for but an
hour. In the mountains, the constant interplay of the light and darkness
achieves its most austere yet spectacularly beautiful form.)
