Chicory in drought . . . (Chicorium intybus).
Composite family. Native to Europe,
naturalized in North America. The flowers bloom in the early
morning, and then the same day wilt and lose their color.
Notice that the field of surrounding grass is not only parched dry, but also
that it
was mowed about four weeks ago. (Hacked off stems os Chicory.)
Nonetheless,
the Chicory, with its thick deep taproot, is indeed what one might think
of as
a happy wayside survivor, coming right back up and flowering for a second
time.
