Dave, at Copperfield Park near The Oxbow . . . Dave got me going
in the right direction. He showed me a good trail on the topo map
for views of the Snake River Canyon. I spent two days hiking
up and down these old dirt jeep tracks, marveling at the contrasts
of early Spring light, the moodiness of the March weather—now sun,
now snow down to 600 meters—and thinking to myself all the time that
this is the best time of year to be trekking through the Hells Canyon area.
The snakes are still in their holes, it's still too little to graze for stock, and
most especially, in contrast to the dry, hot conditions of Summer,
there is now snowmelt water everywhere!
