Fake! . . . Many of the cultivars we plant in our gardens exhibit strinkingly
loud, artificial colors. Indeed, these seem to me only one step away from plastic.
Perhaps you've noticed our sense of natural sound has suffered a similar
degradation. Nowadays, very few have experienced first-hand the beauty of
acoustic string instruments, but only know them 2nd-hand through recordings,
or worse, via electronic ('plastic') imitations. The last phase of this fall from grace
is when we start imitating the artificial sound on natural instruments,
and, most importantly, are not aware that we do so. Summer in North America.
