KEEP OFF! North American Lawn Culture
Vast tracks of the suburban landscape are treated as green plastic
carpet,
which, from the perspective of healthy natural habitats for birds, butterflies
and children, is a primary artifact of
the culture of waste. It is an interesting metaphysical problem to understand
why such flat, monotonous, hard-to-
care-for surfaces are given so much significance. How is it possible that
something which pollutes in every
direction -- noise, air, ground, groundwater -- is
thought to be so beautiful?
