sweet gum, leaves

SWEET GUM! -- leaves . . . (Liquidamber stiraciflua) Native to North America.
The 5-pointed star shape of the leaves is unique. So, too, is the corky, rough-ridged
shape of the younger twigs and branches. The delicate, almost translucent, rosy-colored
leaves in the foreground are an early prelude to autumn.
