English Plantain . . . (Plantago
lanceolata) Introduced from Europe to North America.
Notice the flowers open from bottom to top. The little white disks
on outstretched threads are the male stamens. This is an unpopular weed,
but rabits love the thin leaves. I like to watch the progress of their
flowering
like a kind of natural clock. This week, I've seen entire sandy meadows
covered with this species of Plantain, all flowering in a seemingly synchronous
way.
