Bouncing Bet . . . (Saponaria officinalis)
Introduced from Europe to North America.
Bouncing Bet was in earlier times the name of a washerwoman, which
in turn refers to the colonial practice of crushing Saponaria leaves
to make
a soapy washwater on the Newworld homestead. One only has to tell
a little story like this once to a child, and they'll never forget. Think
of that!
