NEW MUSIC FOR A NEW YEAR!

  *TIMELINE*

A new addition to THE MAGIC BOXfor vibes & marimba:
"Timeline"
two modes of temporal movement,
linear and curved, or slow and fast, are woven together
in a complex composite.

The three main voices—the vibraphone music, the marimba music,
as well as
the slow music of 80 regular pulses or steps for both
vibes and marimba—may be played in conjunction
with the duo independently as separate solo pieces.

Featured photograph/poems from "Images of the Natural Year":

*WINTER RIBBONS*

This week, three new translations from the
GERMAN:

[And once I took between my two hands]

And once I took between my two hands
your face. The moon's light fell upon it.
Most unfathomable of all objects
beneath the overflowing of tears.

Like one who is willing, whose hushed term,
almost was like a thing to be held.
And yet there was no being in the cold
night that more endlessly escaped me.

O there we flow smoothly to these places,
penetrating into the small surfaces
all the waves of our hearts,
pleasure and weakness,
and to whom finally do we proffer these?

But to the strangers, who misunderstood us,
to the others, who we never found,
to those servants, who bound us,
winds of spring, that with this vanished,
and to the silence, the one who has lost.

Rainer Maria Rilke [Paris 1913] (tr. Cliff Crego)

Simplicity

In Politics, the
most radical
idea is simplicity;

In Art, the most
difficult
idea is simplicity;

In Science, the most
necessary
idea is simplicity;

In Religion, the most
mysterious,
arduous, complex
idea—

   is simplicity.
