Featured photograph/poems from "Images
of the Natural Year":
*The Staghorn Sumac &
Vivaldi's Autumn*
This week,
a new translation from the
Italian:
AutumnThe peasants celebrate the pleasures of fall,
Great bountiful harvest with dance and song,
So fortified by wine of Bacchus all
They end their feast with sleep deep and long. From songs and dances they all have done
As a gentle breeze tempers delight.
`Tis the season that invites all and one
To that sweetest of pleasures found in dream at night. The hunters depart with the coming of first light
With horns and muskets and dogs they are led.
And chase the wild game, its trail in their sight. The beast is frightened by the noise overhead
Of muskets and dogs—wounded, still threatens to fight
And stand and flee, but overwhelmed, it falls and is dead.Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)
(Sonnet used in Vivaldi's Op. 8 No. 3)

Featured Picture/Poem:.
*INTRO: GERU*
http://picture-poems.com/features/intro-guru.html
As the door closes, a jingle
of bells -- raining, cold,
the shop is warm but not crowded.
She looks out the display window
onto the narrow,
busy street -- small cars,
pedestrians, a woman with
a child on theback of her
bike navigates the
flow...She sees this,
amazed, the so determined look
of the young mother,
an envelope of
protection from somewhere. Thoughts cross
her mind this way -- cars, traffic, noise --
which she can't quite get
hold of...The berries of the mountain ash
are almost too big
for the tiny winter wrens. He
stops, amazed, counts seven or more
all on the same tree;
they show no fear;
ecstatic with fall, they are gone.
The limbs of the baretree shiver,
his camera, covered
with wet snow...
She sees this ... [...]
