Featured photograph/poems from "Images of the Natural Year":

*Trumpet Creepers and the Poetry of Place*

This week, ten new translations from the
DUTCH [with intro, recordings & poster]:

Aurora

The night's metaphorical secret
Imbues me with but not a single rhyme
But it awakens the birds out of their nests
And throws them on high along the
Arch of sky : this will be the last chance
For the stars to tremble, the thirst
Remains unquenched, the precious water
Carries dark ships further, later,
The black of night gives way to light
That rises hesitantly at the edge
Of the world, along the land of polders,
The morning opens its face.

Featured Picture/Poem:.

American Triptych: (2) Hamadryad

It begins.
A map, a line, a
road is built.

One tree falls,
a cascade follows,
slopes left naked in the wind.

Look alike seedlings
in row after row, a handful
of pennies
for fifty
tons lost.

...This necessary a-
symmetry...

A saw's steady journey into
the tree's
distant past,
a year of growth cut
away in a second or two.
A man looks --
that moment of hesitation
as the great

fall begins --  [...]
