P/P Photoweek: Common Persimmon (XII.1.2003)

common persimmon

Common Persimmon
(Diospyros virginiana = divine fruit + of Virginia) . .
Native to North America.
I've read that Persimmon originates from, most likely via an Algonquin language, a Cree word

pasiminan,
which means dried fruit. Other common names are Simmon, Possumwood,
and Eastern Persimmon. This time of year, with the rather large edible ripe fruits (berries),
hanging on the bare trees like ornaments for a festival of Fall, I find Persimmon
especially striking.
