Featured photograph/poems from "Images of the Natural Year":
*COMPLEX LEAVES, SIMPLE POEMS*
This week, five new translations from the
DUTCH:
The Hazelnut
It was still winter as
unexpectedly at the crossing
of two paths I happened
upon a flowering hazelnut.
Backlit hung ribbons
of gold they are;
hesitating, captive
I brush against the wood.
Trembling from above a fine
cloud lets loose and descends;
and so dusted with pollen
in the bare forest
I stand there shivering
remaining reluctantly,
and I touch for a moment
the darkness of its woody trunk.

MORE LEAVES
Oak leaves: white, black,
red to scarlet and bur—smooth lobes
to prickly bristles
and back, bringing out
the myriad accents
and turns of a phrase.
