Featured photograph/poems from "Images of the Natural Year":
*WINTER RIBBONS*
This week, three new translations from the
GERMAN:
A WalkAlready my gaze is upon the hill, the sunny one,
at the end of the path which I've only just begun.
So we are grasped, by that which we could not grasp,
at such great distance, so fully manifest—and it changes us, even when we do not reach it,
into something that, hardly sensing it, we already are;
a sign appears, echoing our own sign . . .
But what we feel is the wind against us.Rainer Maria Rilke (1924) (tr. Cliff Crego)

This is a talk given by Dr. Lonnie Thompson in December of 2007 at
the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union. Dr. Thompson
is a senior research scientist at the Byrd Polar Center at Ohio State University.
This is an address which deserves serious and sustained attention by all

with an eye to the quickly disappearing alpine ice fields of the Earth.
