May, Zumwalt Prairie . . . The brown patches under the fence and pine tree are
a kind of 'snow shadow.' They indicate places where the winter snowpack formed
deeper snow drifts that take longer to melt in the spring. This extra source of
moisture is of great importance in a habitat that tends to be relatively
windy and dry.
